The Startup Arewa Event: Northern Nigeria’s Tech Scene Comes To Life

The story of Nigeria’s tech startup scene has for a long while been played out in the rooms and collaboration spaces of Lagos. While bright young minds in the city have created amazing things from the little that the developing tech environment has handed them, the rest of the country has been largely left out of the revolution. In recent times however, we have seen the emergence of startup hubs elsewhere Nigeria, with techpreneurs seeking to start the fire of innovation in other cities.

Northern Nigeria has become part of the narrative as well. Innovation hubs such as CoLab (Kaduna) and nHub (Jos) have gotten tech enthusiasts excited, and the opportunities for growth seem great. But there is still some way to go- the north, as much as anywhere outside Lagos, is still trying to play catch up. This is why the Startup Arewa event is being organized.

Startup Arewa is a multiple-day event which aims to explore Northern Nigeria’s burgeoning tech scene. Its organizers aim to identify, group and profile IT ideas and innovation and discover talents from the region who could go on to something great in the near future.

Activities at the program will include a hackathon, startup demos, panel discussions, and the unveiling of the Startup Arewa Accelerator Program and Angel Investor Network. Participants will have the chance to meet with major figures from the ICT sector, and listen to opinion leaders and successful techpreneurs give valuable insight into what it takes to bloom in the barely trodden path that is northern Nigeria’s tech scene.

Persons interested in attending the Startup Arewa event can register online as tech lovers or as startups. Participating startups stand a chance of getting incubation space for their innovative ideas to get further developed.

Startup Arewa is organized by Emerge Tech Africa and the Network of Innovators in Nigeria. The event will take place and will take place at the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation Hall, Kaduna, from November 17 to 19, 2016.
